I was looking for Lulu Shelton and her brother Joe, walked with a limp who lived in Rural Retreat, near Wytheville VA. Lulu had a daughter named Judy Lynn in 1960
I’m not sure who they are, but if you will email me some information, I will do all I can to help you find them!
what happened to the “Shelton’s of Kentucky” ?
I don’t have but a minute fraction of info here.
Moved to Greenville, TX.
I am the son of Charles Edward Shelton, who in turn is the son of Fred Ames Shelton and in turn is the son of William Edward Shelton… how far back did you want the answer?

Died in Kentucky in 1977
I am curious about your sources specific the ealy portion 1100 to 1600s. I have been working on Shelton Family from North Carolina Tennessee Virginia. So many histories have been built using internet sources etc that has been disproven.
I never use the “work” of others from the internet. I do, however, use the internet to search for documentation sources (not from individuals).
https://sheltonfamilyhistory.wordpress.com/tag/shelton-family-tree/
Check out this one. It is the most accurate I have found.
Hi, I am a descendant of Alfred Munday Shelton, who was the son of Thomas Shelton, d. Mar. 12, 1741. Alfred, along with brother Thomas were orphaned when Thomas died. Does anyone have any information on what happened to brother Thomas, who was b. abt. 1800 ? Thank you. Sue (Shelton) Adams.
I’m away from home this week but will get with you on this on Sunday the 28th. Thanks for everything and will talk with you then.
I’m descended from Capt. John Chilton of Maidstone England (confirmed by DNA). He died in westmoreland, Va 29 April 1708. He was married to Joan (Jane) Ball. At some point, his descendants moved to Accomack county, VA and ultimately to Marion Station in Somerset County MD. By then, they were spelling their name Chelton. Is this group reflected in your research and if so where? Or are they not related. Thanks so much.
I have only found Shelton, Sheldonne and Skelton. Sorry.
Excellent Information.
Through DNA testing, we know that Roderick Shelton is the father of William Duckworth Franklin by way of Mary Stevens Franklin. William Duckworth had 2 daughters, Glumdaclitch Franklin Troy Franklin, each of whom married George Washington Hensley who is the great-great-grandfather of my husband
I’m a descendant of Roderick Shelton whom you mention was born in 1754. In reading the material prior to that paragraph I can’t follow the trail to who his father was. Do you know who Roderick’s father was?
John Shelton was Roderick’s father.
I show the following:
Father – Ralph Shelton, Jr 1709 – 1789 Grandfather – Ralph Shelton 1685 – 1733 Mother – Mary Daniel 1710 – 1764 Grandmother – Mary Jane Crispen 1685 – 1765
Hopes this helps. Feel free to take whatever you need from my online ancestry. It is current with the above information as of today.
Bob Shelton
You have Thomas Shelton birth 1606 married Hannah Wood. They had a son Stephen Shelton in 1730 you state Stephen passed away but I cant find any information listed on Stephen Shelton in your information. Not sure if im just over looking it or if you have no more information.
On my Tree Maker I show Stephen to have been born 1602, died 1653/54, married Anne West. Father was Gentleman James Shelton.
My mother’s maiden name is Shelton. My grandfather is William H Shelton born 11-10-1902 in Cullman Co Alabama and died 9-27-1968 in Portland OR. His family is from Cullman, Alabama. Any info would be appreciated and could they be part of this family tree? His father’s name was James P Shelton born around 1872 in Cullman Co Alabama. His mother’s name was Fletcher McWater who was born in 1878 in Jackson Co GA & died 12-12-1943 in Cullman Alabama, That is about as far as I got.
Hello, my name is Amy. My 5x g.g.father is John Shelton. His son Caibourne Shelton is who I can trace my lineage to. I’m just courious why not much is metioned about him. I do have info on him, I was just wondering. Have a great day ☺
There isn’t much mentioned about most Shelton people. The reason is quite simple: This is not a complete history of every Shelton person or line. This is merely a work in progress. If you want to add any information, I will be happy to add anything verified. Thanks! Karla
There are 2 lines not included. The Sheltons from hanover and also from Greene county. I am a descendant of Ivy Shelton from Greene. I am named after Sarah Shelton, Hanover, who was Patrick Henry’s first wife. A lot if history there.
Just discovered this site today and I think it is the most complete history I have come across. I have been searching for the parents of Ezekiel Henderson Shelton b 1776. Surry Co NC since I 1st discovered his marriage record in Grainger Co, TN back in the 80’s. Many researchers have his father as ABRAHAM COOPER SHELTON b 04 MAR 1735 • Middlesex, Accomack County, Virginia. But Abraham left a will and there is no Ezekiel mentioned. I have no proof but believe Ezekiel H. is the son of Ezekiel b 1733 son of Ralph b 1709 and his wife Susanna Fretwell. Any help will be greatly appreciated. James Clark
Hi, I am a descendant of James Shelton (b. 1725) 7x ggfather. I save my tree in Ancestry.com and familysearch.com, they are stalled at Sir. Ralph Shelton 23rd Lord of Shelton. Thank you for your work on this! I am hoping you would be willing to provide documentation regarding this line that I can save in these databases. Please let me know.
Hi, I’m looking for some information on “Malinda” Shelton born in Alabama in 1865. She married my great grandfather, William Baxter Griffith, in Shelby county, Tennessee in 1891 and she already had 3 children – Virgie “Lizzie” Mae Elizabeth Shelton born 1886 and Elliott Caryle Shelton born 1886 and Alice Shelton born 1881. She died in White County, Arkansas as Malinda Griffith, but we don’t know the exact date of death. Her headstone is missing the dates due to tornado damage from many years ago. I’m trying to find out who Malinda’s previous husband was and I’m assuming he was a Shelton. Do you have any information on this Malinda Shelton?
One more thing that might help – I found her oldest daughter, Alice Shelton, on the 1910 census living with her grandmother Jane C. Gammond.
I think you have made an error regarding Thomas Shelton at the beginning of the 1600s — There are two Thomas Shelton listings in wikipedia for the beginning of the 1600s – one as stenographer (belonging to this Shelton family) and the other as a translator (Not from this branch…) Here are the two listings:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Shelton_(translator)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Shelton_(stenographer)
Thank you ever so much for your comment, Ted! I had wondered about that for SUCH a long time, but no one else seemed to notice the possible error. I haven’t worked on any of this file for literally years! I will certainly correct this. Again, Ted, THANK YOU!!!
Happy to help – very interested in your work. My dad had done a lot of independent research when I was younger but I wasn’t much interested in it at that time. My own children are now asking about our ancestry and it was great to find your website so that I could tell them something of where our family came from.
I’ve just ordered this book on Amazon which has a perspective from my great Aunt on our family (but is mostly about her own life) — https://www.amazon.com/Song-Life-Shelton-Maud-Key-Rock/dp/1401031153
If I find anything interesting I will pass it along!
Thank you ever so much, Ted! 🙂
My Grandfather was Eli Shelton, married Jane Price. They owner land in the smokey mountains in Tennessee,Tobacco growers. My Dad was Stephen Isac Shelton born 1900 one of 11 children he married to Cynthia Ellen Rains.I see nothing of them.
As you may have noticed, this site does not have every Shelton person included. If you would like to send your documented information, I will happily include your family. Thank you ever so much!
I HAVE MORE GENEA
LOGY IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE SHELTON BLUE BLOODS!
I would love to see what you have, Melissa. Please email me at any time.
Where is the line from Madison County, NC.
That line isn’t included as of yet. It is also part of my own family line. As noted, this is not a complete all-encompassing every single person and/or line included here at this time. Please feel free, any and all, to email me with any documented information you would like to see here. Thanks!
My family tree descends from Roderick Shelton. My father was Stephen I. Shelton, and his dad was Eli Shelton. I have a copy of our family tree going back to the Knights of the round table. We also are related to Abraham Lincolns wife. When I get a chance I will copy, and try to email this to you. My name is Brenda Shelton. Please leave your email
I can get my Shelton tree to go back to 1033 with Robert De Sheldonne who died after 1070. I read one story that the Shelton line began with two brothers that came to England with William the Conqueror and they did well for him and he rewarded them with land known as Shelton and they changed their names to Shelton.
My tree is huge, I think, with 45,000 entries. What would you want to see?
If you want to send a gedcom or anything else to me, please send it to my email – nelsonkarlaj at outlook.com. Thanks!!!
Did you know that the Shelton family managed all of the properties for Henry the 8th?
Yes, I did! I’m happy that you, too, know that! 😀
The 21st Lord, Sir John William Shelton, born 12/12/1472. I show he was married to Lady Anne Boleyn, the aunt of Henry’s wife that lost her head.
Anne Boleyn was only married to Henry.
There were two Anne Boleyns. The elder was the paternal aunt of Queen Anne, wife of King Henry VIII. In other words, there were, indeed, two women named Anne Boleyn. The Queen Anne Boleyn’s dad’s sister was also named Anne, maiden name Boleyn, who married one John Shelton.
I think that is what I said.
Yes, but I was replying to Rita’s comment that Anne (the Queen) was only married to Henry. I’m not certain she recognized that there were actually two women named Anne Boleyn, although we had both mentioned that fact.
My mistake. I caught that after I posted. Sorry.
Thank you
I have a Scottish line that is even more prolific than is the Shelton line. I am related to the Bruce clan, Robert and others. And another that is Irish and it makes me kin to all of the ancient Kings of Ireland.
It is fun as well as very educational to develop all of our lines. They are a wealth of information if one spends the time to work them as far as they will go.
Absolutely! Thank you!!
Hello! I am a descendant of the Alabama line. My Great grandfather is Ethan Shelton of Reform, AL. I understand that there is not much about our line? We have a hardcover book that was made in the 1980s (I think) that shows the connection back to the Middle Ages. Is anyone familiar with this book? My mother (Patresa Shelton) has one I know. I do not.
Look up the Old Rectory in Great Snoring and Sir Ralph Shelton in the 1600’s and note the book mentioned. Actually, there is a great deal about the Shelton’s. You just have to do the searching. The Shelton family managed all of Henry the 8th’s property and one of the Shelton wives was the Aunt of Anne Boleyn.
You are correct, Robert. I have done the searching and research. I don’t have everything I’ve researched on here. I do, however, have Sir John Shelton, 21st Lord of Shelton, married to Anne Boleyn, aunt of the Queen.
Thank you for posting!
I, like you, always believed there was not much on the Shelton’s until Ancestry.com gave me 90 days for free and that hooked me and I now have a ton of information. If you get really into our background you will find all of the Irish kings and many, many from Scotland, along with those that actually settled Ireland.
I have always thought it clever how the Shelton’s came about. There really were no Shelton’s, but there was some land and a town called Shelton Green and Shelton and two brothers came over with William the Conqueror and he rewarded them with that land and that town and they took the name Shelton as their own.
So, when you do your ancestry history, it is not Shelton history, but the history of those that married into the Shelton family that gives you your background. We just have to hope they married well.
Some of this stuff gets more than a bit bizarre. I show that my 64th Great Grandfather is Marc Antony. Or, that another Great Grandfather was one of Alexander’s 5 generals that divided up his kingdom after his death. How about Robert I, King of the Scots “the Bruce” as a 20th Great Uncle?
This, of course, presumes that everything we find is accurate. 🙂
When you are dealing with their relationship to the Tudor’s, Henry 8th, they had a pretty solid relationship, but when the Tudor’s were out, so were the Shelton’s. When they sold the Old Rectory in 1600 and something, they were in hock up to their ears and it was a must sell. Find that book I mentioned earlier. It is supposed to have a ton of Shelton history in it.
It is addictive to play with all of the ancient history.
Robert
My grandmother, Ivy Shelton, comes down from the John Shelton who was Lord High Sheriff of London. His wife was a lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth. I don’t have the history in front of me, but tree has been done and authentic ated by the Sheltons of Rural Point in Hanover County VA., as well as other relatives. I am named after Sarah Shelton, 1st wife of Patrick Henry. There is, of course, so much more. Wish I had the history. I used to, but no longer. Several other family members and relative do have it, however.
Very interesting, Alison! I live in Alabama, but not from an Alabama-based line. I’m sure, however, that we must certainly be related somewhere up the line! Thank you for posting!
Thank you, Robert, for your input. I started researching long before computers were even in the hands of people, long before Ancestry dot com came about. I have a huge collection of ancient books upon which most of my research has been done on the Sheltons of England. Keep it coming! 🙂
Thank you, Sarah, for your input. It’s all oh, so very interesting, for sure!
Roderick Shelton and Sarah Ursula Briggs are my 6 times great-grandparents, thier Daughter Sarah Shelton married David Norton in 1794 (my 5 times great-greandparents). Thier son Jesse John Norton was born in 1795 and died in 1850. He was married to Mary Pollly Ransey. (my 4 times great grand-parents) They had a son William Josiah Northon 1823 married Jeannie Ponder (my 3 times great-grandparents) who moved to Arkansas after his death in 1867 .
I have alot more if you would like.
Thank you so much for posting this.
Thank you, Joni! So… are you, then, from any of the Shelton Laurel, NC bunch?
Yes. Roderick Shelton was John Ralph Shelton’s son who moved there from Virgina.
Then we’re distant cousins, Joni! 😀
Nice to meet ya….
That’s awesome…
Feel free to email me personally.. I can give you the rest I have….
Very impressive work. Thank you.
Thank you, Robert. Someday I may get this thing added onto. I’ve got tons of info… just finding the time to incorporate it here is quite a challenge at this point in time.
Nice to meet ya….
That’s awesome…
Feel free to email me personally.. I can give you the rest I have….
Will do, Joni. Are you a member of any of the Shelton Laurel, NC groups on FB?
No . I didn’t even know they had any.
Oh, yes. I will email you a link.
Fantastic!!
You’ll be finding a zillion and one relatives there. 😉 Happy you found us.
I have joined them…. I can see that… Reading all the posts now…..
I’m so happy that you have joined us, Joni! I know everyone there is thrilled to have you with us, as well. 😀
Thank you… It is alwats nice to find and be around “new” family…😳
My wife’s family is descended from William Duckworth (Duck Shelton) Franklin. My request for your opinion is this: Since it is fairly well documented that Ducky is possibly the illegitimate son of Roderick Shelton, should we perpetuate the myth and continue to document the father as William Franklin, or follow the Shelton line? I have found some Franklin Ancestry trees that claim their DNA results connects them to the Sheltons. Not yet sure how I’m going to enter the info…
any insight you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your opinion!
I descend from Roderick (1754-1816) and Sarah (Briggs) Shelton’s son, John. DNA does prove that Duck Franklin was, indeed, a son of Roderick Shelton and Mary Franklin. Duck was illegitimate, so he was given his mother’s maiden name. Thank you ever so much for asking, Alvin! Your wife and I are blood-related, although quite distantly! 😀
My wife was born a Franklin. With my tongue firmly planted in my cheek, does this mean that she, and all previous Franklins all the way back to Ol’ Duckworth are actually Sheltons? And to keep from tangling up my already gnarled tree, I should disregard any Franklin ancestry prior to Ducky and just go with the Shelton bloodline?
In all actuality, this is for my and my children’s info, my wife thinks genealogy is generally a waste of time!!
Again, thanks for all your hard work and helping me out!
Your wife and your children, do, indeed, carry the Shelton bloodline. However, Duck’s mother was a Franklin, so they carry the Franklin blood as well. So no, don’t disregard any Franklin ancestry prior to Duck (I love how you call him “Ducky”). Just make certain you follow the Franklin bloodline backward in time from Mary Franklin, over and toward the current time.
Remember one thing. Even though Duck was the son of Roderick Shelton, he was given the surname of Franklin for a reason. So all of his descendants are Franklins as well as Sheltons, and they should carry the Franklin name with much pride.
I am so happy you’re working on this for you and your children as well. I’m sorry your wife doesn’t share your enthusiasm, but everyone in the world isn’t as interested in our ancestors as are we. My husband used to think that my research had been a waste of time… until he tested for DNA! Now he’s quite interested… just not interested enough to do any research of his own. hahaha
You’re ever so welcome for the tiny bit of help I may have given you.
Genealogy is genetic research. Family History is all about family, blood-related or not. They do go hand in hand, in my humble opinion. We have so many in our histories who were illegitimate, adopted, etc. But that never makes them any less family. 😀
Alvin, if you would email me at nelsonkarlaj@outlook.com, I will happily share the link to my ancestry tree with you, if you think it might be of some help.
Wasn’t Duck’s mother only a Franklin by marriage. Reportedly, her maiden name was Stevens. Besides, being six generations removed from Roderick and Glumdalclitch’s “indiscretions”, it would be a little late to fix the surname situation now (not to mention quite confusing!!)!
I am sending you an email to your address now, thanks for the assist!
I’m not positive about Mary’s parentage. I’ve seen her listed as “Franklin” and as “Stevens” – I’ve yet to see the correct answer.
I am looking for information on Jane Levina Shelton, daughter of John Shelton and Susan (Sukie) Hord of Spotsylvania Cnty, VA. Her father’s will does not mention her or another daughter. I have been working on an SAR supplemental on John and I am descended from Jane. SAR will not accept any references from “A History of the Shelton Family of England and America” which states she was John’s daughter, or the “Genealogy of the Hord Family” by Arnold Harris Hord (1898) which also names Jane as a daughter, nor the Hord book review published 1899 in the “Virginia Magazine of History and Biography” which states the book is accurate on the genealogies. Does anyone have any knowledge that will help or a scan of an original document connecting Jane and her parents? I believe she was left out of the will because she was about to be married when John apparently became ill and wrote his will. He passed before the marriage occurred a couple of months later. I found a DAR application but they would not accept it either, even though DAR had accepted the Shelton book references. Jane is the roadblock to completion of an SAR supplemental on her father.
I’ll see what I can dig up for you, Wiley. Will get back with you tomorrow. It’s late here and I’ve got to hit the hay.
Wiley, currently I have no information at all about Jane Levina Shelton. It appears I have some work to do!! 😀 Let me know what you find out?
The SAR genealogist insists when is not a descendent of John based only on the will that they have a copy of. The DAR accepts the Shelton book reference as proof but has no knowledge of the Hord book that was 30 years earlier. The Virginia Genealogical society accepts the Hord book as proof the year following publication but the SAR genealogist does not. Does this sound like the vicious circle? I will be back in Virginia the last week of July for the Jamestowne Society event and if time permits, I will try to stop off in Spotsylvania to see if there might some documents at their library. We will also be stopping at the DAR headquarters the week before for the same reason.
It’s a vicious (and I do mean VICIOUS) circle, to say the least. I wish you the best of luck. Thank you ever so much for keeping us posted on your progress! Do they not realize he omitted her from his will because she was about to be married, but that he died just prior to her marriage?? *sigh*
Yep, we tried to tell them that. There were actually two daughters omitted out of the will. Jane and her sister, Elizabeth, who I believe was already married. That particular genealogist would not accept the fact that the marriage was already planned, for October (two months after the sign date of the will) and that John had probably already given a dowry of some sort to Jane and her future husband. If I find an actual document I will post a link here for others. My cousin and I spent some time viewing Shelton business papers at the Virginia library archives but they were related to a different Shelton in Spotsylvania (possibly an uncle). We were told that their archived documents were purchased from a collector in California who had purchased the Shelton Papers from the Virginia Historical Society. The “Shelton Family in England and America” book also references an earlier family tree that was put together in the late 1800’s by one of their very respected members but we have not been able to locate that particular document. Of course, it probably would not do use much good if it did not include references to actual documents.
Who did Jane marry? Was it a Cook?
I do not know if my last comment posted so I will try again. Delete one if it did go though unless you want both.

I have an approved SAR supplemental 188096-ACN #80423 on my cook family line that accepts Henry Shelton Cook as Henry and Janes son. I also have family bible pages proving the Cook-Shelton marriage which SAR has accepted. But that is where it goes no further.
here’s a link to the Hord Family book that has the family tree for John Shelton/Susan Hord

I dug out my digital copy from (one of my many) external hard drives I use for genealogy safe-keeping the very next morning after I got your first comment here. I don’t know why on earth that person you’re having to deal with won’t budge!! It’s nuts! I’ve been searching all over the Library of Virginia online archives, as well as the Library of Congress! Cannot find a doggone thing! UGH! That person just needs to realize that records then do not equate to records today. Are she and her husband possibly mentioned in a will of one of Jane’s siblings listing her as such???
I thought that was who she had married. I just haven’t added them into all this yet. Let me take my thinking cap OFF, get up, turn around, and put it back ON. Maybe that will clear my head for a minute. 😀 We’re not giving up on this! Not without a fight!
Oh, there has already been a fight with SAR. My cousin saw to that when his application was turned down! LOL I was reading some of your history above and saw where James arrived in Jamestown in 1610 and was a land owner. I went over to the Jamestowne Society website and did not see him listed as a qualifying ancestor so I sent them an email just to see why he isn’t listed. As a land grant owner and a member of the first courts from 1619 to 1624, he is qualified to be listed. I’m a member of Jamestowne Society on another family line (Wm. Farrar and Cecily Jordan). Cecily also arrived in 1610. If I can ever prove this connection of Jane Shelton to her parents, Jamestown Society will be the next!
I’m very familiar with the William Farrar and Cecily Jordan names. I cannot believe they aren’t listed with the Jamestowne Society! Good grief!!
Well, just keep up the good work, Wiley!!! We’ll both just keep on keepin’ on, I guess! 😉 I’d love to hear about your cousin and “the fight”. LOL
It’s the Shelton name that I could not find, not the Farrar line. I’m a member using Wm Farrar. With what is on your page here and a number of other pages I have read on James Shelton, I expected to find James Shelton but it isn’t in their list.
I gotcha!
My Grandfather was Harry L Shelton. His Father was born in Virginia. Need help on his particulars. Thanks. Joel Stephen Shelton. Jsteve1@protonmail.com.

Hi, Joel Stephen Shelton! What, specifically, do you need help with concerning Harry L. Shelton? Have you got a tree available for me to see what you currently have and what you need help with?
I just found your tree on Ancestry. I’ll look at it and try to figure out what may help you.
Karla
Figured I come in and report on my research into the Shelton line in my family that came out of Spotsylvania, VA. Recently, Ancestry DNA has expanded their DNA to 5th great grand parents. My DNA had been previously tied to Jane Levina Shelton and Henry Cook II but had not been tied to her parents, which I have commented on Jane earlier. When the newer DNA ThruLines was posted, it tied me to William Parks Shelton, the father of John Shelton and grandfather of Jane Levina Shelton. It also linked me to Thomas Hord, the father of Susannah “Sukey” Hord who married John Shelton and was Jane’s mother. While this DNA is not accepted by SAR and DAR for proof of lineage, it does show that my family tree is accurate back to 5th great grandparents and that the books “A history of the Shelton family of England and America”, 1941 by Mildred Campbell Whitaker (Author) is accurate as is it shows the family tree of John Shelton with Jane as a daughter. The book on the Hord family also has the same information published almost 50 years earlier but declared unacceptable by SAR, as was the Shelton book. The VA Historical Society verified the accuracy of the Hord Book when it was published and posted a review in their publication. The DNA explodes the view by the SAR genealogist that Jane was someone else’s daughter as others are also linked. I believe that she was left out of her father’s will because of her pending marriage to Henry and had already been given her inheritance. The lack of documentation has proved to be a real problem. I’m thinking those surviving records from the 18th century became a casualty of the Civil War.
Thank you ever so much for the update! Very interesting!
Both of my parents are descendants of Ralph Shelton (Mary Daniels) and his sister Elizabeth Shelton (William Davis). I am happy to share what I have regarding their lines.
So nice of you! Feel free to email me anytime at kayjayshelton @ outlook dot com! 🙂
Hi y’all…I’m looking for any information on a Henley or Henly Shelton. I saw that he was a brother to Eli, but I can not find a thing on him. Thank you in advance.
