  1. Hello. Your research is amazing!!!!
My goal at this time is to trace my Shelton line back to Virginia in the 1600s. I can give you some names in my line and you can tell me if you have run across them please.
My grandfather Walter Lee Shelton Sr. of Bolivar Landing and Greenville, MS (1880-1979)
My great grandfather Walter Park Shelton of Greenville, MS (1855-1914)
My great great grandfather Dr. Walter Marrin Shelton of Hanover County, VA (1817-1862) and died in Memphis, TN
My great great great grandfather Walter Parks Shelton of Hanover County, VA and died in Memphis, TN (1777-1852)
That is where i leave off. I would appreciate any help. Thank you. Lanier Bogen

    1. I’m looking into your ancestors and will let you what I can dig up. Thank you ever so much for listing your ancestors!

Have you, by chance, done an Ancestry DNA test yet?

      1. Thank you for looking. Yes I had one done a few years ago. Not sure where the results are.
Can you email me your findings please. Lanier Bogen.

What wonderful work you’ve done! Thank you. I do not see any Oklahoma Shelton’s listed. I know it is a hard line to trace due to Shelton’s living with other Shelton’s, etc., but if anyone has OK Shelton info I would love to read it. I’m still searching for a Henly, Henley Shelton that has a tombstone in Iowa.

I’ve been researching our family tree on Ancestry.com and I am seeing a disparity in a number of other members trees as to the parentage of John 21st Lord. One states (as you do) that his father was John 20th Lord, but many others state that his father was Ralph, 19th Lord… with two John’s in a row (20 and 21) this could get confused and perhaps the repetition is just a number of people copying the same wrong info? But the records related to Ralph 19th being the father of John 21st seem much more complete… any thoughts?

    1. My thoughts on this matter is that the research needs to be done via the British Archives. This is where I did my research on the English Shelton lines. I never copy anything from the research of others. If I didn’t research the information it won’t get published.

  4. Loved reading this genealogy since I am a Shelton who is directly descended from this line. One correction: Ralph Shelton (1430-1497) was not a Knight of the Garter. He was, I believe, and Knight of the Bath.

I’m sure you are aware of the discussion about Ralph Shelton, born 1685, died 1733 as to whether he was born in England or in York County, Virginia. Current thoughts are that he was born in England and is not the son of Peter Shelton (1665-1718). I tend to understand this argument. What evidence do have that he was born in Virginia and that he is the son of Peter Shelton?

Also, I am trying to find a link between the Sheltons in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. One line comes through Thomas Shelton (1723-1808) – my family and one through Ralph Shelton (1685-1733). Do you have any idea if and how they are linked.?

    Thank you for your help.
    Sincerely,
    Connie Bradshaw

    1. Thanks for your interest and comments, Connie! After 50 years of researching my Shelton line, I am more than aware of all the controversies and discussions regarding Ralph Shelton/Peter Shelton, etc. There are so many more that I wouldn’t begin to try to list them all. What I’ve done is ignored everything everyone else has written and have dug into the document archives from both England and America to find the truth as best I can. This is an ongoing search. My personal quest will end with my last breath. I suggest to everyone to do their best to research properly to the best of their own ability. I deliberately do not include my source documentation on this site so that people will use my findings as clues to coming to their own conclusions. Entirely too many people take what they find online and put it into their research as fact without checking things out first. This site is not intended to do research for anyone else.

As for the connection of Thomas Shelton (1723-1808) to Ralph Shelton (1685-1733), I will have to search through my many archived files – remember – 50 years’ worth! – to be able to answer that question. It will take a while.

      Thanks again, Connie!

      Sincerely,
      Karla

Thank you for your quick response. I have found your information extremely helpful. I am descended from the Sheltons of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. I go up through William Shelton (1758-1827), great(4) grandfather to Capt. John Shelton (1649-1708), great(7) grandfather. I found this out several years ago when I decided to research my family. Recently, I decided to research the ancestors of a very good friend of mine in order to produce a book for her 80th birthday. What I found out was that she had a Shelton line in her family (Middlesex and Pittsylvania). Her line goes through Ralph Shelton (1685-1733). If this Ralph Shelton is the son of Peter Shelton (1665-1718), she and I would be 9th cousins. This would be exciting for both of us. We have been friends for 40 years. How sure are you that this Ralph Shelton was born in Middlesex County, Va. (not England) and is the son of Peter Shelton?

        Sincerely,
        Connie Bradshaw

  6. The information I have here is what I believe to be true through all my years of research. How exciting that you and your dear friend are most likely related! 😀 You and your friend are also related to me! 😀

    Sincerely,
    Karla

  7. Ralph Shelton born 1685, married 1706 to Mary Crispin and 10 or 11 children. Also married to Elizabeth Downing in 1708 2 children, died at 30? I don’t find any documents supporting Elizabeth Downing?

    1. Thank you so very much, Mary, for locating this error in my file! The Elizabeth Downing paragraph is incorrect. I am fixing it now. Thank you again.

    2. That wasn’t supposed to be Ralph Shelton b. 1685 at all. 🙂 Just goes to show that no one is perfect and that no one should ever copy the work of another without verifying the information.

  8. Oh my gosh! This was a great read! Was hoping to find a connection to my great-great grandpa Shelton, but I still really enjoyed reading all of it. 50 years of research… Wow! That is dedication – especially given how difficult it must have been to find sources when you started. 🙂

    1. In the beginning, everything was on location, writing letters, sending off for documentation, etc. Although we now have a lot of online sites to search, the old-fashioned way still works, too. 🙂

Did you ever come across the Sheltons in Shelton Laurel,NC. I have done my DNA and many post say that William Duckworth Franklin was really a Shelton. Anything in your research relating to the Sheltons in NC

    1. Yes, Sharon, I am related to (but not a descendant of) the Shelton Laurel Sheltons. William Duckworth Franklin was, indeed, a Shelton by blood. I have a ton of research relating to those Sheltons and related families, but none of it is on the site here yet. I’m working on updating and “finishing” the info that I’ve already got here, and then have a zillion times more to input. I do it all manually, so it’s a bit time-consuming. I could let my genealogy program(s) make the web pages, but then I can’t check for errors in the information as easily. Feel free to email me at SimplyGenealogy at outlook dot com and I can fill you in on some things you may be searching for. I can also lead you to the Shelton Laurel FB group if you’re not already a member.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Excellent work. I’ve been researching back to try and find where my direct lineage seemed to have broke off from the main line. I think I have found it. If you don’t mind I’d like to list the line that I have found, as it may help some others put there pieces together. I am from the Shelton’s of Indians. I am Daniel W. Shelton , born in CA. , My father is Daniel G. Shelton., Grandfather is Orville G. Shelton., Great Grandfather is Roy Joseph Shelton., GGgrandfather is Joseph Wesley Shelton. -Son of Marion P. Shelton. I think this is where we seem to part ways. Appears Marion was never married and only had the one child. No mention of the father anywhere. Marion was Daughter of Curtis H. Shelton from South Carolina then relocated to Indiana. Curtis H. Shelton was Son of Colonel Abraham Cowper Shelton. Then I believe your lineage line takes it from there.

    1. Thank you, Daniel! Of course, you can share anything on my site, but please just mention that it is my work so that if anyone has any questions they will know who to contact. I really appreciate your filling in the info on your family as well. Excellent!

I apologize for a few spelling errors. I meant to say that I’m from the Shelton’s of Indiana.

  12. I continue to follow comments on your Shelton line. At the same time, I am still looking for documentation on my Shelton line for one particular ancestor. It’s been a while since I said anything regarding this and maybe there will be a reader who has come up with something on my line and this one ancestor. My line apparently separates from your line at James Shelton & Mary Bathurst, our common ancestors. I am descended from John Shelton & Jane Chilton, then William Shelton & Hannah Armstead, then William Shelton & Elizabeth Rogers, Then John Shelton & Susan (Sukie) Hord, then Jane Levina Shelton & Henry Cook. The problem is proving that Susan was the daughter of John and Sukie, as she is not mentioned in her father’s will. Her sister, Elizabeth, and a brother are also not mentioned. John and Sukie lived and died in Spotsylvania, VA. I have two published books that mention Jane being the daughter of John and Sukie. The first book is Whitaker, Mildred Campbell (Mildred Genevieve Campbell) “History of the Shelton family of England and America.” [St. Louis, Mound City Press, 1941]. The 2nd book is “The Hord Family of Virginia” by Rev. Arnold Harris Hord, 1898, and revied for accuracy by the Virginia Historical Society in 1899. Unfortunately, neither book, although considered accurate, give documentation references. If any reader has any information they can share on Jane Levina Shelton being the daughter of John and Sukie Shelton, it would be a great help. The Sons of the American Revolution does not recognize Jane as being John and Sukie’s daughter, based entirely on the absence of Jane being mentioned in father John’s will, written a little more than a month before she married Henry Cook. They do not recognize either the Shelton or Hord genealogical books because of the lack of documentation or previously approved patriot applications on William or John as changes is proof requirements are not met in the older applications. William Shelton and son, John, both served in the Revolution.
